Staying Power

I was in a pretty crappy mood all day. Nothing big just some personal stuff and a stressful work day. Nothing a good workout couldn’t fix! I still didn’t want to go today, but I made a plan that I would split my cardio up among the machines to make it less tedious.

For lunch today I enjoyed some mas ‘tater soup.

Plus a side salad of spinach, shredded carrots and feta w/ homemade dressing. Those were my legitimate veggies, in case you were curious.

I stewed, brewed and was just plain unpleasant until I had a telecon training session to attend at 2 p.m. I put my professional and perky face on for that, and passed that hour by quickly learning about a “fascinating” government search engine.

When I was all trained up, I went to the kitchen for a snack with staying power.

Yeah, this was pretty much a meal. I used a whole avocado because it was kind of teeny.

The plan is to eat large snacks in the afternoon in so that I won’t be a hungry beast at 5 p.m. And even though avocadoes are technically a fruit, I’m going to count that as another veggie for the day :)

The snack of whole grains plus healthy fats worked beautifully, and I was able to hit the gym right after work and get in a happy little workout: 20 minutes running on the ‘mill, 20 minutes intervals on the ‘lliptical, and 20 minutes reading on the ‘cycle. It went from intense, to energizing, to recovery. I loved every minute of it.

I’ve been cooking as I’ve been typing up this post, so I’m off to eat!

Do you snack? What’s your go-to snack with staying power?

What’s white and orange and veggie-less all over?

My eats last night ;) Hey hey! As soon as I posted last night I warmed up some potato soup and chowed down. My appetite was nutty yesterday and I was s-s-starving!

I let that digest while finishing up my laundry and chatting with the roommate, and then I headed out (into the darkness) for a workout. I ran to the gym, did 30 minutes of high intensity intervals on the elliptical, and ran home. I was a smelly, sweaty beast when I got home. I did some stretching and ab work while watching TV and then called it good.

All in all, it was a great workout but that doesn’t necessarily mean the slump is over. I had to force myself to get out there. However, I think the reason I’ve been slacking may have to do with my nutrition.

Over the weekend I ate a lot of fatty foods that probably made me feel lethargic. Yesterday, I pretty much only ate sugary carbs (apple, sweet bread) and didn’t really get a significant source of fat or protein – which explains why I was ravenous at the end of work despite having eaten plenty of calories. I brought some more substantial items to work with me today, so hopefully that will help!

After I finished up my workout yesterday, I may have rewarded myself with a treat. More sugary carbs anyone?

That would be vanilla froyo with a third of a mango. Is it just me, or does the color scheme above eerily resemble that of the potato soup? Yeah, looks like I’m in desperate need of that veggie challenge.

I thought I’d prove to you all that I do in fact drink my greens every morning.

I usually use about 3 handfuls of spinach each morning, as long as my supply is sufficient. To really complete my challenge today, I plan to eat legitimate veggies (aka not potatoes and green onion) at every meal. I’ll be back tonight to reveal whether or not I was successful!

Have a good one guys :)
