Mi casa es su casa

I’ve been in a strange state of mind lately. Maybe I’ve mentioned this already? I’ve felt a little “out of body” all week if that makes any sense. Kind of separate from my emotions. It’s a weird feeling, but not a bad one. In fact, I’m wondering if I’m in some sort of Zen state? Maybe the increase in running and yoga is getting into my brain? Regardless, I ain’t complaining.

Oh, and before I forget – thank you all so much for your input about gluten free and post-gallbladder eating! My gluten free friend is coming to spend the night on Saturday (we’re having a grown up slumber party woo hoo!) and I am going to take some of your suggestions for snacks for her!

I intended to have a repeat of last night’s dinner for lunch today, but I forgot to add the mozz cheese and hummus to my tupperware and was thus left with only sweet tater and brown rice. Being the zen-ified soul that I am of late, I didn’t fret and simply added some other cheese I’d left at work and some hot sauce.

Not quite as delicious, but still quite tasty.

The rest of work went rather swimmingly. Got a lot done. Had an orange for a snack. Didn’t have a more substantial snack since I’m not working out today and my appetite was a little weird due to some green tea drinkage.

So, without further ado… here is the apartment tour I’ve been promising for weeks now! I’d like to note that my apartment is nothing special, and I’m only doing this because several readers requested it via the Ask Me Anything forum. I don’t know squat about decorating, so if you would like to poke fun anything you see you’re more than welcome to :)

Okay, we’re walking in the door.

This is what I come home to every day. I think it’s rather quaint.

To the left of my small entryway I have this picture hanging that my Mom bought me my freshman year of college.

I used to really love the Gone with the Wind book when I was younger. Since I’ve become more educated I realize that it’s a highly racially charged piece of literature and my love for it has waned slightly. But it still brings back memories of pouring myself into a book and becoming completely absorbed in the character’s lives. Seems I have far less time to do that lately.

Let’s take a closer look at the living area shall we? This is the view I see the most often ;)

I heart my TV. Not even going to lie. I really need a new couch to watch TV on though. I’ve had that one since my sophomore year of college which, shockingly enough, was 5 year ago! White couches are not meant to live that long. However, that expense just isn’t at the top of my list right now.

This is perhaps my favorite spot of the apartment, decoratively speaking.

Hanging things is a big challenge for me, so I thought that mirror/tile combination was quite snazzy.

I’m also really impressed with myself for having kept that Poinsettia alive for so long – over 2 months now! Does this mean I can get a dog?! I really want one.

Moving along we have my dining nook.

Very sparsely populated is this area. I’d like to eventually get a wine rack or a buffet table to go on the other side of my “dining room”, but again it will take some time for that to become a reality.

My kitchen is a standard galley kitchen.

I carried the coffee theme from the dining room over into the kitchen.

My hand towls and oven mits are coffee related also. I like coffee, so it’s kosher.

Behold! My toilet. Or my bathroom rather. I feel a little awkward about this picture, but whatever.

“Powder Room” is so much more lady like than toilet, yes?

This cross is hanging on the wall next to my bedroom door. It makes me happy.

Moving along, we have my bedroom. (Resisting the urge to say “And this is where the magic happens” proved to be to great a challenge for me, although no magic really happens in here.) I need to do a lot of work on the bedroom. I love my furniture and my bedding, but I need to spruce it up.

I want to use purple as an accent color. I think purple and black has a very chic, Japanese feel.

I spend very few of my waking hours in my bedroom since I don’t have a TV in there. I have terrible sleeping issues, so I’ve reserved that room for sleep only. And dressing, I do that in there as well.

On the other side of the apartment is the workout room/den. I really like that lamp, even though the shade is perpetually crooked. The crookedness just gives it character.

Here is the famed elliptical that I mention watching countless episodes of House upon. It takes up practically the whole room, but that’s okay.

Lovely combination of flower wall hangings, workout equipment and a fan. Did I mention how amazing I am at decorating?

The  polka-dotted spare bathroom/laundry room. That shower has not been used since I moved in, which kind of weirds me out. However, that will change this weekend when my friend Victoria comes to visit!

Last, but not least, we have my view!

I’m actually really pumped to be that close to the pool. I think it will be fun in the summer.

I plan to get a grill and some outdoor furniture for that there patio and have cookouts!

So there you have it, my humble abode. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s definitely my favorite living space I’ve had since I left the nest at the ripe age of 18. I feel very at home whenever I walk in the front door, and you really can’t beat that.

Denture-Friendly Foods

Good morning friends! I want to thank you all for your kind words about my skin, but I really don’t think that picture was an accurate depiction. I had to take it on my computer because I suck at taking pictures of myself via the hold arm really far away and guess that you’re in the viewfinder method. I have a friend visiting this weekend and I’ll have her take a picture with a real camera (if I remember) so that you can see more clearly.

Also, it’s not that I think I have “bad” skin, I just feel like it’s been a little dull lately and has kind of been making look my age when I’d prefer to perpetually look 21 ;)

Anyways, on to last night’s dinner, which was fabulous.

A very orange bowl consisting of steamed sweet potatoes (I cheat and use Ore Ida Steam ‘n Mash), brown rice, mozzarella cheese and Chipotle Sabra hummus.

This is seriously baby food style cuisine at it’s finest. If you ever have your tonsils or widsom teeth removed, keep this concoction in mind! I know that I’ll be feasting on it whence the time comes for me to get dentures.

And to continue the baby food theme, I had an equally gummable (definitely not a word) dessert.

Cottage cheese with an unsweetened pomegranate applesauce. The unsweetened combination isn’t quite as delectable as it is with sugary applesauce, but I guess that’s to be expected.

I can’t believe today is already Thursday. This week has gone by even faster than usual. Tonight is my rest day from running, so I’m looking forward to a relaxing evening.

On another slightly random note, I wanted to ask for some input from you guys. I have a friend who is having her gallbladder removed next week and a friend that was just diagnosed with Celiac’s disease. I know there is tons of information that can be pulled up via Google or at any bookstore regarding these things, but I was wondering:

Has anyone had their gallbladder removed/know someone who did, and do you have any tips for post-surgery eating? It seems very restrictive (no fruit juice, no coffee, no nuts, no fat, etc.), and I want to help her out as much as possible so she won’t feel like she has to give up every food she’s ever loved.

Do you or does anyone you know have a gluten intolerance? What are some of your favorite gluten-free products?

I really appreciate your help! I just feel like if I was facing a whole new way of eating after 25+ years of eating whatever I wanted, I’d want my friends’ support for fitting into my new lifestyle. I want to help them as much as I can!

Enjoy your Thursday everyone!
