Marathon Training: Here we go!

Well guys, the time has almost come! After anticipating it for months now, I will begin my marathon training tomorrow morning!

I freak out about the fact that I’ve committed to running this marathon at least once a day. It seems so unattainable and scary right now, but I know I can do it if I just train hard and smart.

My pre-training training went really well. I’m glad I took the time to focus on building some muscle, I think it will be a huge benefit. During my half marathon I had little to no muscle tone and I was sore for about a week after the race. I’ll need to be in better shape than that to deal with all the long runs I’ll have to complete.

I will be following Hal Higdon’s Marathon Training Schedule: Novice 1 for the most part during my training. I also plan to run some of my long runs with a local Oklahoma City running club – The Landrunners.

For my short runs, I have several friends who have volunteered to run with me, which is awesome because I know I will get tired of running alone eventually. There’s a lot of running to be done!

My Goals for Marathon Training Success:

  1. Flexibility. I think this is so important when training for a race. I know there will be weeks when sticking to the plan exactly won’t be possible, and that’s cool. I just want to follow it as well as I can and be as consistent as possible.
  2. Continued Strength Training. I will still be going to Body Pump classes 1 to 3 times per week to keep my strength up. I also plan to work my core 2 to 3 times per week.
  3. Make it social. Like I said, I have plans to run with several friends and coworkers. I think this will help keep me from getting bored and discouraged.
  4. Mindful eating. I’ll be doing a subsequent post about my nutritional goals for training, but I really want to pay attention to what I’m eating and make sure I’m nourishing my body appropriately.

And that’s pretty much it! I’ve never trained for a marathon before, so I’m sure there will be all sorts of unforseen challenges and successes that I could never imagine. I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds!

I’ve set up a Marathon Dreaming page on the blog to track this journey. Now that I’m really into it I’ll be doing weekly updates on my progress as well as occasional posts about hot topics I discover along the way. It should be interesting!
