I really couldn’t decide if I wanted to make any goals for 2011, but when I got to thinking about what I did and didn’t accomplish in the last year it soon became pretty obvious what I needed to do.
I discussed how well I did with my 2010 goals in my previous post, but after I finished writing it I realized that everything I accomplished was basically for my own personal gain.
I’m not trying to lessen the feeling of accomlishment I have over truly kicking resolution ass in 2010, but as I move into a new year I think it’s time that I turn my energy to things outside of myself.
In 2011, I intend to:
-
Start volunteering. This is terrifying to me as I have become incredibly shy and introverted over the past couple of years, but I believe that is something I can and should overcome to achieve this goal.
-
RECYCLE. Every since I moved out of a house where we had those handy little recycling bins, my recycling efforts have died. I feel guilty about it regularly and yet never do anything to change it. No more! I will find a recycling facility and start utlizing it in 2011.
-
Pray more for others.
-
Donate to charity. I do this fairly regularly, but I know I can do more even if it means not buying something I want in order to donate.
-
Do more yoga. Okay this is mainly for me, but in reality, yoga makes me zen and when I’m zen the world is happier. Promise
That’s it! So simple and yet so important. I know if I can do these things I will be doing my part to make my community and the world a little bit better and in doing that I will also be making myself better.
Sorry for sounding so much like a Miss America Pageant, but sometimes waxing on cheesily about world peace just feels good. Ya dig?
Q’s:
Do you have any goals for the new year?
Do you recycle? Volunteer? Any tips for me?
I haven’t thought much about my resolutions, but I always recycle. I got into the habit when I lived in Sweden since you must recycle there by the law. I used to volunteer a lot in high school, but I haven’t done much volunteering lately. I would love to volunteer at an animal shelter or an art gallery.
Wishing you the best in 2011!
Do you have Whole Foods near you? They usually have recycling bins behind the store where you can take your recycling if where you live doesn’t recycle. I used to do that.
I also want to do more yoga in 2011.
Not yet but we’re getting one soon, I cannot wait!!!
I recycle… not too much on the volunteering. I’m pretty shy, too. Starting something that I know nothing about gives me bad anxiety. I guess it’s something I need to work on!
I don’t really make new goals for the New Year, but rather try and take it day to day and put my best foot forward. Sometimes I take a step back, but as long as I keep the big picture in mind, I figure it’s a good resolution solution.
That said, I love the idea of doing more instead of giving up something. I’ve found that for me, signing up for something can kind of make me claustrophobic (I have commitment issues.) I might start out volunteering for something and then resent having to do it–that sounds bad, but you know what I mean. So what I do is go with my heart. If I get the random urge to go help somewhere, I don’t wait for the “perfect, scheduled time” or anything. I just do it–or something similar.
I also make sure that I do monetarily donate at least a little at regular intervals to my special causes (animals, of course) and find inexpensive ways to help out. You would be surprised at the odds and ends animal shelters need that people don’t think about–blankets, newspapers, toys, etc. A lot of places have wish lists year round, making it an easy way to make a big difference!
That is a great philosophy. I think having it scheduled as another timesuck would make me resent it also. I plan to just do what I can and not have any goals on the number of hours I commit or anything.
Great goals! I set a goal for 2010 to do more yoga and failed miserably…so I learned not to impose ‘exercise’ goals for myself anymore – it just makes me rebel…against myself. But good luck to you and all your other very honorable goals!
Good point, although I don’t really do yoga for the exercise aspect. It just eases the pain I have in my low back from having such tight hamstrings and helps me manage stress.
I think those are all good goals! I always want to volunteer each year but never do – I don’t know what holds me back! I look forward to hearing about your experiences.
Great goals! For volunteering, I’d say visit your favorite charity’s website. Usually there’s info there on how you can volunteer, like organizing walks or other events. Or you could just find a local soup kitchen, habitat for humanity, etc. Google can help you with this!
For recycling I’d say call your township offices and find out how it works. Maybe there’s a local center or maybe you can get some new handy bins? Google can help you with this, too!
Good luck!
I recycle. Or at least I like to think so. My complex has an area with two huge bins. “Recycling” and “non”. I like to think they go to seperate places. But I’m not so sure.
In this case, ignorance is bliss.
They totally go to different places. Just believe! Haha.
Go to your city’s trash collection site. They should give guidelines about how to recycle and what is recyclable.
I have been volunteering for the military squadrons teaching their physical fitness classes. I LOVE it, and it makes me feel good too!
This year, I am going to start volunteering using my environmental degree. We shall see what happens!
I love this. I really want to be a part of something bigger than myself this year too.
I love your goals!
Yoga, for example, is something I use to hate.
But now I love it!
Let’s hope 2011 bring the zen that’s inside us
Happy 2011, girl!
xoxo
I didnt set any goals for the new year. I have some things that I want to do, but those were already in my head a few months ago so I dont think it counts.
I recycle everything because I still live in a place where its easy to do. Thats one good thing about being in a basement suite. I put my recycle box out on the curb every week and the guys take it away. If it wasnt so easy, I probably wouldnt do it.
Yeah I’m ashamed at how quickly I let it go once I was binless. Those things are so handy!
Great goals Kacy! I volunteer and I recycle. I’d like to get into composting but I don’t know how realistic that is for me right now as a student in an apartment. As for volunteering, I can’t tell you how amazing it will make you feel! I’ve worked with kids at different schools and day cares, at large organizations like World Vision, and most recently at a nursing home. Each experience has been rewarding in its own way.
And I want to add that I wish I lived in OC so I could be at that blogger meetup in your last post!
I wish you did too! Although it is kind of boring haha. Come visit anytime
Thats awesome! Love those goals, I guess on that note I just want to be nicer to people all in all and watch what I say and think about it.
I love your goals! I do have a few goals. One of them being that I really want to get a job that I will be completely happy with. That will make me feel fulfilled and will pay more so I won’t have to struggle so much.
Oh I feel ya there! I would like that as well!
Awesome goals, girl. As for recycling- you should check out my girl Jen’s blog- she is running a year round green challenge with some great ideas- http://jenisgreen.com
Yay for more yoga! You will love it
i really want to volunteer too! i’d love to help out at a children’s hospital.
Target has recycling bins too. It’s pretty nifty. The zoo also does recycling programs.
The hubby and I recycle bottles (glass and plastic) as well as paper. I would like to start recycling tin cans and yogurt containers/ milk cartons as well.
I set 11 goals for 2011. I really like your goals – they are good for you and for others!
Ha ha, I just got to this now and understand why I got recycling questions earlier. Your apartment complex should have recycling with their garbage…at least the City of Edmond does it like that…
Normally, I don’t make goals, but it’s a special year for me since I’m now half way to my weight loss goal…so I’m continuing that. It’s to be healthy (even though I’m sometimes vain).
You know I’m a Girl Scout Leader and it takes a LOT of time, but I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. If you find something you’re keen about, the “volunteering” isn’t even about “volunteering”- you end up having lots of fun and don’t notice the time it takes.
You’re a good writer, maybe hold some seminars for college kids who have to write essays or do resumes and such. Or offer to edit master’s theses or dissertations…you like to run…maybe volunteer at a water stop at events you don’t want to run
I’m definitely going to volunteer at races. Never thought about doing the editing thing though. I don’t know if I’m qualified to edit theses, haha. I’m not that smart. I think I might start with the Food Bank and go from there.
You hold a diploma. You qualify for editing!! Think of it, poor college kids need all the help they can get!! I had our admin assistant edit my thesis at Devon and she wasn’t even a writer. It’s just about helping someone out who may overlook that they typed “hat” instead of “that”…yes, that actually happened to me…
True. Very true.
YESSSSS to recycling! Mama E is a fiend about it.
and faboosh goals! i love the yoga and volunteering – i shall play along with you on both those. happy 2011 girlfrannnnnnn!
