The 9 miles that weren’t

I quit my run today.

But first, the good stuff.

Okay, really I just wanted to visually stimulate you before I started rambling for awhile.

Anyways, my 9-miler today turned into a 5-miler.

My excuses:

  • It was hot.
  • It was the second windiest run I’ve ever experienced.
  • I haven’t slept well all week and woke up this morning feeling as tired as I did when I went to bed.
  • To be honest, I had the week from hell.
  • My mind was in a million different places today and not one of them was running.

Excuses are worthless, but I’m not really upset that I didn’t run the full distance. Yes, I’m going to tell you why.

This has actually been my strongest training season yet. I’ve usually missed several long runs by this point. I struggled with injuries the past two times I’ve trained for a half marathon, but I’ve been so much healthier this time around. I’ve done every long run up until this week.

In fact, this was my first truly bad run since I started training. That’s pretty epic.

I run distance races because I like to have goals and I’m addicted to the experience, not because I’m an elite runner.

And I’m okay with that.

I spent a good portion of the “run” walking and reflecting over things that have happened lately and how stressed I’ve been. It was good for me.

As runners, walking is sometimes looked down upon (which is crap), but I really think I needed it today.

Next week… redemption. Ten miles of it.

Now I’m off to immerse myself in the Academy Awards red carpet and prepare myself to kick ass this week.

Have a good night!

  1. You know best when you need to cut a run short, also you’ll still do great! It’s not the end of the training so not to worry. Plus, like you said, you’re ahead of the game so don’t sweat it. 5 is better than nothin :)

  3. 5 miles in my bood IS a long run! You still got out there though and tried! And my sister has even told me that taking walk breaks helps some to improve their time anymore….and if you needed it then there isn’t wrong with it!

  4. Girl, I don’t blame you for stopping. That wind yesteday was BRUTAL! I tried to run but felt as if I were running in place for most of it due to the wind! At times I felt dirt hitting my face. UGH! I hate Oklahoma spring wind!!

  5. We all have those runs when you just aren’t feeling it. One time I called my boyfriend half way to pick me up. LOL. I felt lame but then moved on because I know I’ll always have other runs.

  6. Hi, darling! I’m back to blogging again and found you via miss Sassy Sara. So glad to see you are still blogging. I just started my half training and am a little scared for when I get over 6 miles. A 10K is the longest I’ve done. I think some days when you want to do more and can’t it’s your bod telling you to take it easy. I was supposed to do 4 miles with Carla (remember her? Philaeagles) but her calf was hurting pretty bad so we walked the last o.8 miles. I was happy to have still done something and know I can make up for it later on. Ok, I’ve rambled enough. :D
