When you move to a new city, there are sure to be a lot of hellos.
Hello to a new apartment (I’m pretty sure I know where I’m going to live now! More on that later.), to new friends, to new restaurants and more. I’m so excited for it all!
But first, there must be a lot of goodbyes.

The goodbyes to friends and family are already breaking my heart. I can’t even think about it now. I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.
The main type of goodbye I’m dealing with right now – is to my stuff.
I’m going to try to reduce the amount of stuff I have by about 40-60% before moving. I have way too much crap and it’s not necessary to haul it all halfway across the country. Plus, I’m moving from a spacious two-bedroom apartment to a much smaller one-bedroom apartment – so not all of it will fit.
Also, I’ve had a lot of my furniture and kitchen wares since about 2004 – it’s definitely time for an update.
I’m going to sell a lot of my furniture – almost everything except for my bedroom set because it’s newer and I love it and my TV and stand.
The rest of it is outta here. I’ll be more or less furnitureless when I get to DC, but that’s okay – that’s what floors are for, right? And Ikea
I’m also going to have an extreme decrease in closet space, meaning I need to get rid of a lot of my clothes, shoes and accessories. This stings a little.
If there’s one area where I’m somewhat of a hoarder, it’s with clothing. I fluctuate a lot in size and I never know if something might fit again someday.
But I have to be strong – out with the old stuff and in with the new city!
Between selling furniture online, selling nicer clothes to used clothing stores and having a garage sale at my mom’s – I’m really hoping to make enough money to pay for the UHAUL for the move. And maybe some gas for the two-day road trip we’ll be making with two vehicles.
Seeing as how I’m probably going to be paying two hefty rents for both my OKC and DC apartments in May and possibly June, this will be quite helpful.
Let the goodbyes begin!
Do you hoard your things or purge them regularly?
I try to get rid of a lot of stuff every time I move, but usually only about a 20% decrease – nothing like this. I’m kind of scared.
