Super solid Sunday brunch

I succeeded on making this weekend a relaxing one, even after my midnight work ordeal on Friday night. Saturday I ran errands, got in a run, finally bought some vegetables and then spent the rest of the night on the couch. Even though I had to opt out of some social invitations, I knew I needed the rest.

I rented Hereafter (recommended by the SIL) and Country Strong (because I’m a sucker for country music being from Oklahoma and all). The former was… okay, the latter was pretty good in my opinion. I even liked Leighton Meester in it, and I usually dislike her a lot.

Sunday afternoon, with renewed spirit, I met up with Stephanie for brunch at Chadwick’s in Old Town Alexandria.

This brunch was solid for so many reasons.

Champagne, screwdrivers and bloody mary’s were all $3. Say what? You know I had to get on that.

A damn good $3 bloody mary. I had a screwdriver before that. What? I didn’t go out on Saturday. It made sense at the time.

I had a really hard time deciding whether I wanted breakfast or lunch food, and ultimately decided on an omelet.

While this wasn’t the best omelet I’ve ever had, it was good and very reasonably priced – $9 for all that food, of which I at all but one bite of omelet and one slice of toast.

It was so good to chat with Stephanie and her friends, who are hilarious and fun as well. I rolled out fat and happy without emptying my wallet.

Super solid.

What’s your favorite breakfast beverage? Alcoholic – bloody mary. Nonalcoholic – coffee with half and half.

There in spirit

I’ve mentioned it before, but one of the hardest parts of moving far from home has been missing family birthday celebrations. My family gets together for every family member’s birthday for fun and food, and it breaks my heart every time I can’t be there for one.

However, we’re working out a good system that at least allows me to be there in spirit – Skype + phone pics.

Saturday was an extra special birthday celebration – my Grandpa’s 85th!

This was probably the hardest one I’ve had to miss. My grandpa is one of the most special people in my life, and I know it broke his heart a little that I wasn’t there.

I sent him a gift and the SIL said he opened it up first. I think I’m the favorite ;)

I truly hope he knows how much he is loved and how proud I am to have him as a role model. I just learned yesterday that he only went to school up until the 7th grade, but he went on to start his own business that continues to support my family’s livelihood to the present day (I think every single family member has worked there at one point in time). Everyone in our small community knows him and respects him and he’s constantly donating to local charities and causes.

Despite being a successful business man, he has doted on me since I was born and never ceases to make me feel special and loved.

He is also one of the few people in my life who has provided a positive example of how to make a relationship work. He and my adorable, sweet grandmother are almost at 60 years of marriage.

He is truly a wonderful man, and I love him dearly.

Less sappy posting to follow…
