Not very American

I feel like I’m the only person alive right now who doesn’t give a damn about the Olympics. I don’t hate America, I just don’t get excited for the summer games.

I don’t even remember where I lived exactly in 2008, and I’m almost positive I didn’t watch a second of those games either. Just not my thing.

While I was at Firefly last weekend, I decided it was mandatory that we throw a barbecue this weekend. The fresh air really spoke to me.

Our apartment has a grill and a pool that we hardly ever get use out of, so I figured having people over would maximize the pleasure of grilling and sitting poolside (although not simultaneously, it was a two part event).

However, I totally overlooked the fact that I had scheduled it during the Opening Ceremony.

My bad.

Luckily, people were good sports about it and we actually had a really good turn out.

Since I work from home on Fridays, I had plenty of time to go overboard preparing the food. We had hamburgers, dogs, chicken sausages, pasta salad, taco dip, grilled veggies and spiked lemonade.

Tom is a good griller.

Actually, I don’t think it was too overboard at all. There wasn’t that much leftover food and people still had room for the not homemade snickerdoodles and sugar free apple pie I served for dessert.

We make pretty good hosts, if I do say so myself. Even if our parties take place during the biggest world-wide sporting event of all time…

(Gotta love a good overexposed picture – despite the ghost face, it hides all your sweaty flaws!)

I would never be so dense as to schedule a party during an OU football game though. And football is pretty American. And so are barbecues, come to think of it. So don’t call me a traitor just yet.

After all, I do live in the nation’s capital.

Picture taken at the W hotel, at a party I showed up to where none of the actual party throwers were in attendance. We waited until nearly an hour and a half past time it was supposed to start before heading out. How rude.

Then I spent the rest of the weekend not watching the Olympics. I’m sure I’ll hear enough about it today to catch me up anyway.

  1. yep, phelps lost. weinber didn’t advance to individual finals. Team USA’s BIG stars aren’t coming through.

P.S. not surprised to hear that you aren’t an Olympics fan! hehe! :-)

    • Haha, no worries. Like I said, I kind of set myself up for that by keeping you out drinking til 10 the night before.

    • I was really interested in the gymnastics when I was little, before I discovered my lack of ability to touch my toes or do a proper cartwheel and got jealous and bitter.

  2. I’m glad I’m not the only one not excited by these games. I’m a winter fan personally; the summer games just aren’t as exciting to me. Not a big fan of any of the sports included though, which may have something to do with that haha

    • I can’t really say either one does it for me, but I am happy that athletes of all kinds have a platform like the Olympics to showcase their sports.

    • Haha, I love it. Speaking of alien movies – I watched Jeff, Who Lives at Home on Saturday and it made me want to watch Signs again. The last movie before Mel Gibsy’s fall from grace and Joaquin Phoenix’s official douche-dom should not only be viewed once. It was even on TV yesterday, but it was bath time so I had to pass.

  3. I watched 10 minutes of Olympics volleyball while at a bar on Saturday afternoon – that’s about the extent of my Olympic viewing. I remember watching the gymnastics coverage a lot when I was younger, but I clearly have more pressing concerns, now that I’m an adult…Like going to a bar on Saturday afternoon. :)

    • I guess it would be good for that. But when I wasn’t prepping for the bbq, I was being a lazy bum on the couch all weekend and needed back to back episodes of The Good Wife and a few movies to keep me from falling asleep.

    • I kind of feel that way about the Superbowl too. I’m really trying to make myself like the Redskins more, but it’s taking time. But I like RGIII (even though he beat the Sooners last year and I should hate him) so I’m hoping I can get there this year. I’d like to be more invested in the NFL.

  4. Brandon is way more interested in the Olympics than I am, so it’s been rubbing off on me. We watched a few different sports this weekend, but gymnastics is really the only one that I am interested in. Yet somehow I found myself white-knuckled and shouting “U-S-A” during a few of the swimming…diving…volleyball…. ok I think I like the Olympics.
