Sunday Bon Voyage Dinner

When my friend Taylor and I used to live together downtown, the SIL would invite us over for Sunday dinners on occasion. It was always enjoyable. Especially because Taylor and I were broke and fancy food and wine is never something one should turn down.

This proved true once again last night, as the SIL had us over for one last Sunday Bon Voyage dinner!

The food, was indeed fancy.

This caprese salad with yellow tomatoes was basically all I’ve ever needed in life. So delicious. SO. DELICIOUS.

There was also an arugula salad, which was also wonderful.

She also made a roast chicken, red potatoes with spices and rolls. So much good food!

And of course, delicious wine.

For dessert, we finally got to bust out the cupcakes I bought from Sara Sara Cupcakes.

I don’t know what is up with my camera. Gross picture.

The cupcakes were amahzing though – especially the strawberry and red velvet ones.

It was actually my first time eating a cupcake from any of the Oklahoma City cupcake shops. Not sure what took me so long.

The rest of dinner included a celebration of the OKC Thunder making it to the Western Conference Finals (!) and general chit-chat. It was all very lovely.

I’m going to miss being so close to my family and friends who have known me for forever and get my weirdness, but we’ll still get to see each other pretty often. I refuse to be sad about it!

Do you have regular dinner parties with friends or family?

Coming Up…

Now that the half marathon is over and done with, I of course had to make more future running/fitness plans and goals. It’s just what I do.

The first one is the most exciting thing for me like…. ever!

I’ll be participating in the Oklahoma City Memorial 5K with my dad and stepmom!

Red Coyote shirts

Aren’t they cute?

After I finished the half yesterday, my stepmom said “guess what we’re going to do??”

I could see that familiar fire in their eyes, so I guessed “a 5K?!”

I was right. This is awesome because I’ve been asking them to do a race with me ever since I finished my first half last April.

They’ve finally caught the running bug :) We’re all three registered for the 5K already, so there’s no turning back.

I’m extra pumped that they’re going to do the Memorial 5K because it has such special meaning to me (it was the first 5K I ever ran and my first half marathon) and because it’s just so meaningful to Oklahoma City in general.

I had been toying with the idea of running the half again, but after yesterday I think a nice relaxing 5K sounds like a much better idea. I’ll be staying with them the entire time and cheering them on through their first race. It’s going to be a blast!

I plan to run as many races as I can afford this year – once I get my moving schedule figured out. Yesterday was a wakeup call to me and it lit a fire under my ass – I will overcome my stomach issues!

In non-running related news, I also decided to join Life After Bagels in her Pipes Challenge (the SIL is doing it too – holla for family fitness involvment!).

I did my initial test on Friday and I was able to do 16 real push-ups.

Week 1 begins today, but I think I’ll wait until tomorrow to get started. I’m feeling like some yoga this afternoon to work out the post-race soreness.

I’m really excited about these plans and challenges – they’re really outside of the box for me and will allow me to spend time with my family before I head to D.C. (I want to say something about winning here, but I shall refrain as I think that whole thing is majorly overplayed.)

Do you workout or participate in fitness events/challenges with family members?

Anyone else doing the Pipes Challenge?

&?%#$*@!

Life is about to get crazy around these parts! I’m trying to soothe my OCD/Type AAA/Psychotic Planner self by realizing that everything will be fun and work out exactly the way it’s supposed to. Still, my brain is a bit frazzled!

[source]

Allow me to elaborate (this is solely for my own benefit, but humor me if you’re bored enough.)

If I could just find out what is going to happen with my move and when my actual move date will be, all would be well, but that doesn’t seem like it’s going to happen anytime soon.

In the meantime, I’ve got a lot on the proverbial plate.

March:

  • Get my car looked at because it’s being awkward. Should get this done today hopefully.
  • Fix my wonky vision insurance claim that is causing me more grief than it’s worth.
  • Attend a country concert on Friday at a crazy country bar without obtaining any sort of hang over, because…
  • Gotta run 10 miles on Saturday with Lisa
  • Sunday is an all-day work sesh at the running store, as we’re hosting the Run Lucky 5K for which almost 1,000 people have already signed up!! (Should be a fun event OKC peeps – free food and beer!)
  • The following week I have to cook breakfast for everyone at the office (anyone have any amazing breakfast casserole recipes?)
  • Then that weekend Lisa and I will be heading to Ardmore, OK for the A2A Half Marathon!
  • The next weekend I’ll be leaving for D.C. to scout out apartments!! Hopefully this trip will allow me to get the ball rolling on finalizing a move date. Fingers crossed!!

April:

  • I’ll be working at the running store a lot in April. Partly because they’re going to be really busy, partly because I’ll need to save up money for the move and partly because I’m going to miss it when I go. :(
  • The first weekend is the store’s one year anniversary (!!) so there will be a lot of fun events surrounding that.
  • My friend Victoria’s birthday is also in April, and I’d like to make a trip down there to visit her if at all possible.
  • Oh yeah, and I have to pay my first born in taxes in April. That will be awesome.
  • The RedBud Classic, a huge running event in OKC, is the second weekend in April which will require lots of work at the running store.
  • The following weekend, McNellie’s is hosting a Pub Run that I personally really hope to participate in. It’s a 4-mile race wherein you chug a pint of Guiness after each mile. Yessss.
  • Then the following weekend is the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon. This was the race in which I ran my very first half marathon last year. Sadly, this year I think I’ll only be spectating as it’s likely I’ll be moving around that timeframe (although, who knows). I’ll also be helping out at the expo for the running store and most likely working during the actual race. This is fine with me, because I think it is such a wonderful event and I’m happy to be involved in any way that I can. I’ll definitely come back and run sometime in the future. It’s a great race.
  • There’s also a music festival that weekend that I’d really like to attend, but I don’t know if there will be time. Sad.

And that’s as far out as I can plan.

My lease at my current apartment runs out on May 4th, but I have no idea when I’ll be leaving Oklahoma City.

I honestly wouldn’t mind having a few more months before I leave, as I’m getting really sad about leaving everyone behind. I’m just eager to know the details, whatever they may be.

For example, I’m in a wedding in Mexico in June but I can’t book the airfare because I don’t know where I’ll be living in June. There are good deals out of both cities, but I don’t want to book one and end up being in the wrong city.

I’d actually like to fly back to OKC and leave from here if possible, because my dad’s birthday will be at the same time and I hate the thought of not being around for my family member’s birthdays.

I think I need to get some sort of airline credit card ASAP, as I foresee a lot of homesick trips back to O-City after the move. I’m so unorganized when it comes to getting points for flying and all that stuff. It all seems so complicated!

Really, I need to just stop with the planning and learn to be more flexible. But… that’s probably not going to happen.

I am who I am and who I am is a crazy planner freak. I still love me. Hope ya’ll do too.

Ahhh, I feel better now. Holding all that information in the old cabesa was driving me crazy!

Questions!

Do you have any delicious breakfast casserole recipes for me?

Do you use frequent flyer programs? Any tips?

Do you have any big upcoming plans?

Do you think I’m a crazy person? I think we can all agree that the answer to that question is yes :)

Three dollar burger

Question: Has your work been unusually stressful lately? Life in general a bit more hectic?

Me too. I was talking to my friend Taylor last night and we decided that everyone around us seems more stressed lately. Kind of strange. At least we all have company, right?

I was definitely feeling the stress yesterday and even though I had planned an extra run (to kind of make up for the run I quit on Sunday), I knew I wasn’t feeling quite up to all that. My legs were crazy sore from Body Pump and my mind was shot.

So I text Taylor to see if she wanted to go for a walk, since it was gorgeous out. She one-upped me by suggesting said walk + a three dollar burger at a bar we could walk to.

And that, is how I ended up here.

McNellie's Pub OKC

McNellie’s is great bar in Oklahoma City. A plethora of beers on tap, three levels of entertainment and most importantly – three dollar burgers on Wednesday nights. Three dollars!

We decided to split a burger, which meant a could afford a beer (or two). I went with a local beer per usual – the Mustang Washita Wheat.

McNellie's Three Dollar Burger

Did I mention that this burger AND the sweet potato fries only rang in at THREE DOLLARS?

McNellie's Three Dollar Burger

Splitting the meal brought my portion of burger + fries to under two bucks. That is impressive.

Even though this wasn’t officially on my list of things to do before I move, it was definitely something I have been meaning to check out.

We walked around two miles total – there and back – and it was a lovely way to enjoy the sunshine and spring-like weather and catch up on each others’ lives.

My stress levels deflated, my vitamin D stores were replenished and my belly was happy. Perfect little Wednesday right there.

Sauced

Quite serendipitously, I won a free pizza from Sauced via Twitter yesterday. Who doesn’t want a whole large pizza to themselves after a breakup?!

Sauced on Paseo Vegetable pizza

Sauced is a pizza place located in the heart of The Paseo District in Oklahoma City. I’d been there once before, but they’ve recently been re-opened under new management so I was excited to see what had changed.

I decided to be reasonable and invited dear friend and my breakup therapist Taylor to enjoy my pizza with me. The pie featured an interesting array of vegetables – greens, onions, eggplant and peppers.

Sauced on Paseo Vegetable pizza

I’m not going to lie and say this was the best pizza I’ve ever had – but I’m a picky pizza eater and pretty hard to please. It was good though, and I love that the restaurant is local and in such a cute area.

I wanted to support the establishment with some money instead of just taking the free pie and running, so I ordered a beer.

Michelob Ultra

After we each polished off two slices of pizza and finished our beers, we headed to another cute place in the Paseo called Picasso’s which just started a new happy hour.

I see a new favorite happy hour destination in my future. They had decent beer specials (not much variety) but also half-priced appetizers (delicious-looking hummus for example) and half-priced pizzas. Yes, please. I shall return.

I headed home at about 7, watched some tube and tucked my independent behind into bed by 10.

Me – 1

Breakup – 0

Q: Do you like New York or Chicago-style pizza better? I love both, and it depends on the place I’m at. New York Pizza and Pasta in Norman is amazing, while Humble Pie (Chicago-style) in Edmond is also off the chain. Of course, I’m sure neither can compare to pizza from the actual cities in question. Oh, Oklahoma… you try.

Going out in foodie style

Yesterday was an absolutely perfect way to spend the last day of the year. It started with an early morning yoga class. The easy, relaxing class was perfect because I was super sore from Body Pump last night.

Yoga is officially back in my life, and I couldn’t be more happy about it. I’m going to make it a priority from now on, it just feels so good!

After that, I rushed home to shower and get ready for a special meeting!

I met up with Lisa and new friend Teri at one of my favorite Oklahoma City restaurants, 105degrees - a raw vegan place that I’ve blogged about several times.

Teri and Lisa

Why are bloggers so good looking? ;) They’re also fun to talk to and have great taste in food!

We were all so excited about the menu that we ordered a little bit of everything. Whenever I go to 105 I always have to have a shot of wheatgrass.

Then I started with the Kimchee Dumplings, which I shared with the ladies.

105degrees - kimchee dumplings

I’d had these before at an event a few months ago and knew I had to have them again. They remind me a little bit of sushi but they’re totally raw and vegan.

I didn’t like them as much the second time around though. Maybe they changed the recipe?

105 degrees - kimchee dumplings

The item I enjoyed next was hands down my favorite – Lisa’s Tostado Salad.

105degrees Tostado Salad

Oh my goodness gracious me, this salad was divine. DIVINE! I kept telling the girls that I would be thinking about it every day until I can eat it again. I assure you this is true. I’m pretty sure I’ll be devouring one of these guys within the next week!

For my entree I had the Heirloom Tomato Lasagna.

105degrees - heirloom tomato lasagna

This was different than I remembered it too, but it was still wonderful. The food at 105degrees is just fresh and full of flavor.

Teri’s Massaged Kale Salad was another perfect example of an extremely flavorful dish.

105degrees - Massaged Kale Salad

Seriously, isn’t she adorable?

 105degrees - Massaged Kale Salad

I think they should put that picture on their website :)

We weren’t done yet though – bring on the raw vegan dessert goodness!

105degrees - tiramisu

Raw vegan tiramisu to be exact, with raw vegan ice cream. I died. I don’t really even care that much for tiramisu, and this truly blew me away.

I couldn’t think of a better meal to eat on the last day of 2010, or better lunch dates.

Lisa is one of my absolute favorites, I just adore her. I just discovered Teri’s blog due to this meet-up but I’m already in love with it. She has the cutest boxer ever (my dream dog!) and is just super fun and sweet! I’m so happy I was able to meet her!

I hope you’ve all had a great first day of 2011. It seems my cold has come back for round two so as soon as I finish watching the Fiesta Bowl (BOOMER!) I’m hitting the hay!

Restaurant Review: Rococo (I love it, but I have complaints)

One of my favorite restaurants in Oklahoma City, is Rococo Restaurant and Fine Wine.

I’ve done a review of their brunch before, but I’ve been waiting to do a review of their full menu and now’s the time.

I recently won a $25 gift card to the establishment for commenting on one of my favorite local restaurant blogs – Eat Around OKC - be sure to check them out if you’re ever looking for advice for a great place to eat.

I grabbed the SIL and we headed to Rococo for a lunch date.

Speaking of date, I’d say Rococo is one of the top date-worthy restaurants in OKC. So, if you’re looking for a hot spot to take someone you’re trying to impress. Go here.

The food is really good, the lighting is dim and the choice of booze is excellent (for if the lighting isn’t quite dim enough…). Those three things are enough to get even me to go on a date, and I hate dating.

Anyways, since our lunch date was on a Friday and we were feeling the arduous effects of a long work week, the SIL and I imbibed.

She had a glass of Alamos Malbec (one of my favorite wines) and I had a draft Coop Native Amber. (No pictures because we happened to go on the day before the crappy illness I’ve since been battling first reared it’s ugly head and I was in self-pity mode.)

Major points to Rococo for having a sophisticated wine list and local beer on tap. Those things are hard to find.

We started with one of Rococo’s most famous menu items – a cookie appetizer.

No, that doesn’t mean we had dessert before our meal. Cookies are basically different genius variations of bruschetta with all sorts of yummy toppings.

We chose the one topped with blue cheese, toasted garlic slivers, and asiago cheese.

Rococo blue cheese, toasted garlic slivers and asiago cheese cookie

I don’t like blue cheese, but I could have eaten about 20 of these little guys. The garlic and asiago balanced out the pungent flavor of the blue cheese, and I mean, when is bread and cheese not good?

I’ve also had the privilege of trying the Gangster cookie (on one of those pesky dates mentioned above), which is Italian sausage and sweet onions with pomodoro and parmesan. To die for.

Moral of this story? The cookies at Rococo rock.

Rococo does a lot of things well.

Lobster? I’ve heard it’s to die for.

Pasta? Pretty much the reason for going.

The fish and steak options are supposed to be wonderful as well.

However, I have to be the bearer of bad news here. There are some things that Rococo could improve.

The first – salad. For one thing, they don’t have a lot of salad options, but more importantly when both the SIL and I ordered salads on our lunch date – neither was very good.

I got the Rococo Little Salad.

Rococo Little Salad

The thing is, it was probably our own fault. When you’re going to a restaurant with an acclaimed chef like Bruce Rinehart, you don’t order a salad.

However, if you are an acclaimed chef with an acclaimed restaurant I argue that every single menu item should be delectable, salads included. But perhaps I’m just a tough audience.

Another gripe would be the coffee at Rococo. It’s bad. Real bad. Almost undrinkable.

This… is not acceptable. Coffee is not hard. I make coffee that tastes better than the coffee at Rococo.

Luckily, I can be consoled with a cold beer. Other people may not be so forgiving.

So, Rococo, please learn how to make better coffee. Your patrons will thank you.

My last and final complaint would be the service. While not bad, it’s also not good. When the SIL and I went for our lunch date, I had to have my entree (a turkey burger that was just okay) boxed up so I wouldn’t be fired for taking a two-hour lunch.

You should be able to walk into a restaurant, sit down at the bar, and get in and out in under an hour. I don’t think that’s asking too much.

Now, you may be wondering why I like this restaurant so much if I have so many not-so-great things to say about it.

The thing is that the good at Rococo far outweighs the bad, and our city needs more places like Rococo where culinary genius reigns supreme.

As Oklahoma City restaurant enthusiasts we need to be honest about what works and doesn’t work at places like this, so that they’ll stay in business and more businesses of a similar nature can exist.

So, I’ve said my piece, and I can’t wait until the next time I eat at Rococo. If you’ve not been there, I highly suggest you go.

Order a cookie and a glass of wine and be happy. Then thank me for the recommendation.

Enjoy the weekend all!

Oklahoma City Yoga Studio Guide

With all the running I’ve been doing lately, my body has literally been craving yoga.

There are few classes at my gym I could go to, but I prefer studio yoga for several reasons:

1. I love Body Pump and Zumba, but hearing music bump in the next room is far from a relaxing atmosphere conducive to proper yoga practice.

2. The yoga instructor at my gym thinks I am/look pregant. You can read about that here if you need a good laugh.

3. Yoga studios offer a wide variety of yoga styles instead of the cookie-cutter version you often get at health clubs and gyms.

So, for last few weeks I’ve had it in my head that I wanted to try out one of the many yoga studios in Oklahoma City I’ve been hearing about. Still, this presented problems.

1. I’m really busy with working two jobs, training for a marathon, trying to strength train and cross train on occasion and just in general trying to be a productive human being.

2. When I would randomly get some free time to check out a class, I had no idea what studios where offering what classes and when. Defeated, I would usually go home and watch TV.

But no more! I decided today to compile a list of all the studios and all the classes/class times they offer to have on hand for those rare moments when I have time to take a class.

Then I thought, why not share this list with you guys? Not very beneficial for you non-Okie readers, but the locals might get some use out of it.

So, without further ado…

****

That’s a lot of yoga folks! It makes me excited to see just how many options I have.

Yoga is expensive, so I probably won’t get to check out more than 2-3 classes per month but I’m thinking about making a tab on the blog to do studio reviews.

I’m always interested in hearing about the atmosphere of a studio before I attend a class there so I thought that might be helpful.

Also, I didn’t have time to list studios in the Moore/Norman area (I will do it though if there’s a demand) but if you live South of OKC I highly recommend you check out Yoga Life off of Main Street.

The main instructor there, Becca, is beyond amazing. I started going to her courses on campus at OU and eventually followed her two different studios because I enjoyed her teaching style so much.

She is a hands-on instructor and will help you work within your limitations while also pushing you to challenge yourself.

She’s pretty much the instructor that I compare all future yoga instructors to, and so far no one has impressed me like she did.

Now I have a lot of research to do and hopefully I’ll find some great classes to stretch out my poor, sore legs.

 Q’s:

Oklahoma City locals –

Do you have any feedback to share about any of the studios I’ve listed?

Are there are any studios I missed that need to be added?

Everyone else –

If you practice, what’s your favorite yoga style?

Awards!

Good afternoon. How was everyone’s day? Despite the gorgeous, sunny weather here in Oklahoma City, I had no energy today. I’m just not adjusted to the earlier mornings yet I guess.

Lunch was spectacular today.

I had some leftover black beans from taco night, so I threw them in a salad with half and avocado, 2% shredded cheese, and plain yogurt mixed with salsa.

So good and filling. I love taco salads!

We had a business meeting today, and there were leftover cookies, so I snagged an oatmeal raisin. I’m pretty sure oatmeal cookies are now the only cookie I really like.

Do you see those keys hiding behind the cookie?? Well… I left them at work :( It’s not a huge deal, because I keep a spare house key in my car, but it has my mail key on it (I love checking the mail!) and my gym card. Oh well, they’ll be there when I get back to work in the morning.

And later on I had a more balanced snack.

I know some people are skeeved out by sweet cottage cheese mixtures, but I swear that mixing it with apple sauce is no fail tastiness. And you get a hefty dose of protein in to boot.

I came home after work because I needed to soak some beans for the dinner I’m making tonight, and I’ve decided to make today an active rest day as far as working out goes. I could probably still get in at the gym without my card, but I am going to work out at home anyways while my chili cooks.

In other news, Melinda and Jolene both passed on a “Creative Writer” Blogger Award to me. Thanks so much guys, I am honored!

So I’m supposed to write six “bald-faced lies” and one outrageous truth, and you’re supposed to guess which one is true! So here it goes!

1. My senior prom date (and boyfriend at the time) threw up in my mouth when we were kissing good night.

2. I was in drama in high school and during one play I got really into a scene and walked right off the stage and split my lip.

3. My first job was working at a snow cone stand, but I got fired for not having a car to drive to work.

4. Three weeks after getting my driver’s license, I got into two wrecks in one day.

5. Once, in cheerleading, I performed a whole dance during half time without realizing I had forgotten to put on bloomers.

6. At a wine tasting recently, I spilled a glass of red wine on a lady’s white blouse and humiliated myself.

7. I was a manager at Jamba Juice for one year but never got up the nerve to fire anyone, even though several people deserved it.

Which one do you think is true? All of them have elements of truth, but only one is completely true.

Now I am supposed to pass this on to seven people, which is so hard to do! It just gives me flashbacks to picking teams for dodgeball. Don’t make me choose!

Also, the lovely Susan blessed me with this awesome Sunshine Award!

I can say with complete honesty that, if I read your blog, you are worthy of this award. I read each of your blogs for a reason, and I love that I get something interesting and unique out of each different one. You all bring sunshine to my life :)

Woo child, that was corny. But still true.

And with that, if you’ll excuse me, I must go dance with Ellen. Have a good night!

Enthusiasm & Ibuprofen

“Tuesdays are a day of suck.” This insighful utterance, made by the lovely and astute Amy, made me laugh out loud today. It was more than a laugh really, it was a guffaw.

Typically, I agree with that statement. Tuesdays are kind of like the 23rd birthday of the days of the week. They have no significance or meaning. They’re just there.

Mondays get the award for most dreaded day of the week.

Wednesdays are affectionately refered to as “Hump Day”. (Note however, that I don’t use that phrase on my blog as it skeevs me out a bit. Not that I’m a prude, I just dislike the word phonetically.)

Thursdays have great TV to boast of, and they are the day before Friday.

And Friday through Sunday are pretty self explanatory in their awesomeness.

But Tuesday is the ugly step sister of the days of the week. And I usually treat it as such. But today I got out of the office and had lunch with Greg Elwell, author of the Oklahoma food blog Corner Booth. Check it out. He has a great sense of humor, even if you’re not an OKC resident.

We dined at a place called The Golden Phoenix, in the Oklahoma City Asian district. The restaurant had a novel of a menu, and was rather unique. They had fresh lobster and dungeoness crab in a tank, and ducks hanging in a small, meat locker of sorts. PETA would definitely not be a fan.

But they had many appetizing vegetarian options to choose from as well. For my dish, I chose the stir fried tofu and eggplant in a garlic sauce.

While the tofu was just ordinary, this was hands down the best eggplant I’ve ever eaten in my life. The garlic sauce was phenomenal and the eggplant itself was tender and sweet, without any of the chewy or bitter qualites with which I generally associate the vegetable (or is it a fruit?).

It was served with white rice and I added a bit of sriracha, because I have an obsession.

Another great thing about the meal was that even though I ate at least three-fourths of it, I didn’t feel incredibly bloated or full afterward, as I often do after eating ethnic cuisine. I never experienced a “sodium hangover” either, which leads me to believe that the ingredients must have been pretty high quality.

I’ll be sure to link to Greg’s post whenever he writes his review of the restaurant, because the dishes he went for were much bolder and more adventurous than mine. He was great lunch company as well!

As lovely as lunch was, I felt a resonating fear all today regarding my run. I wasn’t scared of the pain, I was just scared that the pain would still be there and that maybe something bad is going on with my body. But according to my fortune cookie from lunch…

So I got enthusiastic! I thought positive thoughts about my run and envisioned running with no pain.

I also took 600 milligrams of ibuprofen, just in case the mind power failed me.

And I drank about 3 of these large glasses full of water.

Hey, a little hydration never hurt anyone :)

I don’t know if it was the enthusiasm, the ibuprofen or just the couple days of rest but this run went much, much better! Also, I ran it outside, which also helped a lot because I could run at a more natural stride for me. It was chilly out there though! My hands are still defrosting as I type this.

I’m also icing my legs (with frozen towels), which is not helping at all! But I’m determined to do everything I can to train smart for my races this season.

Alright, I’m off to attempt to celebrate National Pancake day, which I think is today…

Did you celebrate?
