Up. Down. Hot.

Well, I’ve had a lovely morning so far.

The power went out in most of my building last night. The downside? I had no air conditioning. The upside? I had electricity, so I could at least watch TV.

I managed fairly well without the a/c. I just got naked and kept a fan near me at all times.

Unfortunately, the power in the building was not restored by the time I woke up this morning. So… that meant they only had one elevator running on a generator. The downside? Waiting 15 minutes for it to arrive in a non-air-conditioned hallway and then squeezing into a literal hot box with 30 strangers. The upside? All that sweating must have been good detoxification. Like a mini sauna.

After a very long elevator ride, where we stopped on each floor to pack more people into the sardine can, I arrived at my car… only to find I didn’t have my car key.

I had two options. Wait for the elevator again and repeat the process outlined above, or go for the stairs.

So… I climbed up 12 flights of stairs in a non air-conditioned stairwell in heels.  The downside? I thought I was going to die. I hadn’t eaten or had any water yet. I was overheated, stressed because I was late for work and pissed off that I’d spent 20 minutes blow drying my hair only to have it stick to my head in a less attractive manner than if I had run a half marathon. The upside? I feel a lot better about my decision to skip the gym this morning. Also, I’m glad I only live 12 flights up. Any more would have been slightly unreasonable.

So, that’s how I kicked off this beautiful Friday. Aren’t things like that are supposed to happen on Mondays? I’m not impressed.

I know I shouldn’t complain though. It’s hot everywhere and I just had one bad incident. There are people that have to work in the heat every day, or worse, live outside in it. I know I’m lucky.

But I still felt compelled to share that lovely story.

Before all that, I had planned to do a whole post about how I actually cooked last night and it was awesome and prove to you that my asparagus really was purple, but that ship has sailed. So I’ll just show you the pictures and depart for now.

See? Purple. See? Dinner. Oooh. Aaaah.

Now I need to drink another gallon of water and complain about my morning to anyone who’ll listen.

Happy Friday!

Assembly at it’s finest

Yesterday was a reversal from the day before. Instead of eating lots of chocolate and no veggies, I ate lots of veggies and no chocolate.

It was kind of shocking, and a little bit sad. I’ll probably locate some chocolate today just for good measure.

The veggies came in the form of a monster salad at lunch, and I suppose you could say with dinner… though I’m not really sure.

Nevertheless, I “cooked”.

Meaning I assembled. I threw some pre-cooked black beans in some corn tortillas and topped them with verde sauce and cheese and baked for a bit. Assembly at it’s finest.

Sadly, this is the most gourmet meal I’ve made in oh… months.

Technically, avocados and tomatoes are both fruits – so this was another veggie-free meal, but a delicious one.

I had to work late last night and since I got in a surprise run after yoga on Monday I declared it a rest day.

Tonight is another yoga and run combo if all goes according to plan.

In other news I’m waiting on an email that will dictate when I get to make my next trip out to D.C. Very exciting!!

What are your favorite enchilada fillings?

Time with me

A workout happened yesterday afternoon. Success!

I did a cardio mash-up consisting of 20 minutes on the elliptical, a “fast” mile on the treadmill, and 20 minutes on the recumbent bike.

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve rocked a recumbent bike. I felt it in new places.

It would have been a good workout were it not for the recurrence of the dreaded numb left leg.

Every time I attempt to run “fast” on a treadmill my leg goes numb starting all the way up at my hip with an achy sort of pain, then with a tingle in the knee and a grande finale of a completely numb shin.

It doesn’t hurt per se, but it makes running very awkward because I don’t feel like I have full control of the leg. I’m hoping I can figure out the cause and stop it quickly. Any one have any tips??

Because I fueled for said workout with a day of bagels and ice cream (literally the only foods I ate before 5 p.m. – it happens on occasion) – I decided some green would work for dinner.

I’ve been all about the vegetables lately. This tends to happen to me in the Spring time. All I want is fruit, veggies and ice cream. I have no opposition to this.

I followed the salad up with a glorious night in with me, myself and I.

I really love spending time with me.

Seriously, I’m a good time.

I really don’t know that I’ll ever be able to share myself with a boyfriend.

That fabulousness isn’t for free.

Okay, that may be a bit overboard – but I really do need a good amount of alone time. When I go too long without it I start to feel off. It’s not necessarily conducive to a relationship, but I’ll deal with that when I have to I suppose.

I got to bed at a reasonable hour and got up for another short run this morning. I’m easing my way back into the running game with a little work on my form – but more about that later.

Now it’s off to the part-timer. Here I go! Have a good Saturday with your fabulous selves!

I know I’ve asked this like a million times, but seriously – does anyone have any numb leg insight?

20 Salads in December Challenge: Wrap-up

Good morning all! I’m feeling better today, thanks for all the well wishes yesterday. I’m still a bit congested, but I think I got off pretty easy with this one.

It must be all those salads I ate this month, eh?

Speaking of which, the 20 Salads in December Challenge has officially come to an end for this girl. I’m currently sitting pretty on salad #22 (one for lunch and dinner yesterday – both unpictured because I was sick) and I’ll probably have one for lunch today as well.

I think maybe I should have aimed for a higher number? Perhaps another time.

Anyhow, I really enjoyed this challenge. As easy as it was for me to complete, I know it helped me with my veggie intake for the month.

Like I said at the beginning, I have a hard time craving vegetables in the colder months. All I want is warm carbs and melty cheese. And chocolate. I ate plently of those things this month, but with all the salads I still got in lots of nutritiousness as well.

There were veggie-loaded salads.

There were take-out salads while I was away on business.

There were salads eaten in the comfort of my own home.

Many, many salads from Coolgreens.

And several others that evaded a camera lens.

Some were more delicious than others. Some were healthier than others. Some were big, some were small.

I thought that by the end of this I’d be done with salads for awhile, but to be honest I just keep craving them. Yay for veggies!

Q’s:

For those who participated, how’s it going? You still have three more days with three meals a piece so you have plenty of time :)

Besides salads, what is your favorite way to enjoy veggies? I love my brussels sprouts, roasted broccolini and asparagus and raw carrots to snack on just to name a few.

CoolGreens to the rescue

Before today, I hadn’t had a single green vegetable since Saturday night.

Not a one.

This obviously needed to be remedied at some point.

So at lunch, I hit up my favorite restaurant in Oklahoma City – CoolGreens.

CoolGreens lunch to go

I got my usual – a Plaza Skinny salad (love the salad, hate the name) with beets instead of capers. This ain’t no puny salad either.

My delicious salad contained spinach, bean sprouts, beets, hearts of palm, sundried tomatoes, avocado, sunflower seeds and chicken.

My vegetable needs are now satiated. Let’s just hope I don’t go another five days before I eat them again…
